After 3,5 years later since the last time Onew did Musical, finally Onew re-enters musical industry as he’s confirmed to play a role in Singing in The Rain Musical on June. This is going to be his 3rd Musical after Hey Bro! (2010) and Rock of Ages (2010). I was actually surprised knowing this news. I always think after Rock Of Ages, Onew probably keep declining Musical offers due to schedule (or probably he realized that Musical gets him exhausted a lot lol). So now, why agreeing to this one?
let’s have a look on the official news about him getting the role in Singing in the rain Musical
SHINee’s Onew is confirmed for musical ‘Singing’ In The Rain’
On April 16th, it was revealed that SHINee’s Onew along with Super Junior’s Kyuhyun are confirmed to play in upcoming musical “Singin’ In The Rain”. SM Entertainment said,”Onew and Kyuhyun will appear in musical “Singin’ In The Rain”.A representative said,”Both of them have extremely love for musical. Despite their busy schedule they always do their best than anyone else in rehearsal. They have good skills and their passion is also really great”, “Singin’ In The Rain” will take place at Chungmu Art Hall, Grand Theatre from June 5th – August 3rd. cr.dkpopnews
I personally think Onew could do more than Musical, i also personally wished instead of doing another musical, Onew would be casted in TV Drama. After Key has been doing Musical non-stop for almost these past 2 years, i don’t think Musical is for Onew’s image anymore even though people know Onew is great doing the job. Yes, Key has taken the Musical spotlight in SHINee. thanks to Onew who decided on hiatus for Musical these 3 years *rolls eyes* But anyway, I admit it.. This is still a good news for MVP because i believe they miss Onew doing this job. I remember he gained popularity in those days when he was being active in Musical. Yeah, i admit it… I miss Onew being busy again, doesn’t matter if it’s Musical or another solo project as long as it brings his name alone for the job.
So, why Singing in the rain? What’s special about this musical/story that makes me think Onew took this offer?
Before this news came out, i didn’t know anything about Singing in The Rain. I’m not ashamed. I wasn’t born in 1950’s anyway. So i started to google and found out about the movie. Also this Musical is adapted from the Movie. So i looked for movie download link and watched it last night. Before I share my opinion about its movie and story, I’ll let you read the synopsis of the story, credit to wikipedia.
Singin’ in the Rain (1952) – Movie
Singin’ in the Rain is a 1952 American musical comedy film directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, starring Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds, and choreographed by Kelly. It offers a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late ’20s, with the three stars portraying performers caught up in the transition from silent films to “talkies.”
Don Lockwood is a popular silent film star with humble roots as a singer, dancer and stuntman. Don barely tolerates his vapid, shallow leading lady, Lina Lamont, though their studio, Monumental Pictures, links them romantically to increase their popularity. Lina herself is convinced they are in love, despite Don’s protestations otherwise.
At the premiere of his newest film, The Royal Rascal, Don tells the gathered crowd an exaggerated version of his life story, including his motto, which is “Dignity. Always dignity”. His words are humorously contradicted by flashbacks showing him taking on a wide range of menial and humiliating roles on stage and in film alongside his best friend Cosmo Brown.
To escape from his fans after the premiere, Don jumps into a passing car driven by Kathy Selden. She drops him off, but not before claiming to be a stage actress and sneering at his “undignified” accomplishments. Later, at a party, the head of Don’s studio, R.F. Simpson, shows a short demonstration of a Vitaphone talking picture but his guests are unimpressed. To Don’s amusement and Kathy’s embarrassment, she pops out of a mock cake right in front of him as part of the entertainment; Kathy, it turns out, is a chorus girl. Furious at Don’s teasing, she throws a real cake at him, only to hit Lina right in the face. Don is smitten with her, but she runs off into the night. Don searches for her for weeks after discovering she was fired, believing himself to be responsible, but Lina tells him while filming a love scene that she made sure Kathy lost her job as an act of revenge and jealousy. Later, Don finds Kathy working in another Monumental Pictures production and they apologize to each other. She confesses to having been a fan of Don all along and they begin to fall in love.
After a rival studio has an enormous hit with its first talking picture, 1927’s The Jazz Singer, R.F. decides he has no choice but to convert the next Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a talkie. The production is beset with difficulties in capturing sound, but by far the worst problem is Lina’s grating voice. An exasperated diction coach tries to teach her how to speak properly, but to no avail. Don also takes diction lessons (albeit with much better results). The Dueling Cavalier’s test screening is a disaster; the actors’ speaking is barely audible thanks to the awkward placing of the microphones, Don repeats the line “I love you” to Lina over and over, to the audience’s derisive laughter, and in the middle of the film, the sound goes out of synchronization, with hilarious results.
After the premiere, Don, Kathy and Cosmo come up with the idea to turn The Dueling Cavalier into a musical called The Dancing Cavalier, complete with a modern musical number called “Broadway Melody”. Don will be able to show off his natural singing and dancing talent, but they are stumped when they must think about what to do with Lina. Cosmo, inspired by a scene in “The Dueling Cavalier” where Lina’s voice was out of sync, suggests they dub Lina’s voice with Kathy’s. They bring the idea to R.F., who goes ahead with it. When Lina finds out, she is infuriated. She becomes even angrier when she discovers that R.F. intends to give Kathy a screen credit and a big publicity promotion. Lina, after consulting lawyers, threatens to sue R.F. unless he cancels Kathy’s buildup and orders her to continue working uncredited as Lina’s voice. R.F. reluctantly agrees to her demands.
The premiere of The Dancing Cavalier is a tremendous success. When the audience clamors for Lina to sing live, Don, Cosmo, and R.F. improvise and get her to lip sync into the microphone while Kathy, hidden behind the stage curtain, sings into a second one. While Lina is “singing”, Don, Cosmo and R.F. gleefully raise the curtain. When Cosmo replaces Kathy at the microphone, the sham becomes obvious. Embarrassed, Lina flees in humiliation. A distressed Kathy tries to run away as well, but not before Don proudly announces to the audience that she’s “the real star of the film”. The final shot shows Kathy and Don kissing in front of a billboard for their new film, Singin’ in the Rain.
So yeah, i have watched the Movie last night. My opinion, THIS IS A GOOD STORY! simple, cute and nice story with happy ending. The dance, the song, the story… for a comedy-romantic musical, this is just what i want for Onew to play. There are a lot of cute tap dancing, I remember i smiled a lot while watching it. It’s such a glorious feeling indeed.
I can’t wait for Onew to have a scene when Onew as Don Lockwood singing and dancing in the rain, the most famous scene in the movie where he would twirl his umbrella and play in the puddle, dancing, singing and feeling he’s fallen in love. It’s going to be soooo cute. Let’s watch the scene from the movie
Yeah, yeah..just imagine Onew would do that in his Musical. Cute isn’t it?
I’m sure the reason of why Onew taking this role is because the story is sooo cute and the character is a happy man with a positive mind (just like Onew). It’s simple, comedy, lots and lots of dancing, I’m sure the moment Onew read the script (or probably have watched the movie) Onew was excited and wanted the role!
I say it as if i know Onew lmao
There’s goes a question that we are the most concerned. Is there a Kiss Scene?
Judging from the movie, yes! there are 5 or 6 kiss scenes in the movie, and 2 type of passionately duet-dance.
Thinking this is Onew who play, I’M PRETTY SURE they will remove the kiss scene for Onew even though they are supposed to have one lol. Look, in the Rock Of Ages, there should be a hot kiss scene between the main role and the girl in the movie but when it’s Musical and it’s Onew, they change the Kiss into only a hug. Yeah, genius *rolls eyes*
This is not like Bonny and Clyde where it rains with a lot of kiss scenes. No, Onew wouldn’t want that happened either. He has die hard fans
and girlfriend who wouldn’t agree that Onew is kissing other girl on stage anyway.
But Good give me Mercy i want to see Onew kissing a girl even just once in my lifetime!!!
There few pictures from western Musical of Singing in the rain, played by Adam Cooper in 2012 UK Tour.
Just seeing to the western one got me excited looking forward to the Korean one.. Yes!
These are the caps from the movie
Oh , by the way there is also my favorite tap dance in ‘Good Morning’ song… it’s cute!
I’m really excited to know who is going to play as Cosmo (Don’s bestfriend) and Kathy (Don’s girlfriend), Onew and Cosmo and Kathy will make a cute dance while singing good morning, I just…. ;__;
Anyway i’m so looking forward to this Musical!! Really can’t wait for 5th June! Don Onew Fighting!
